Five American writers have been nominated for the ninth annual PEN/Faulkner Award in Fiction. They are Thomas Flanagan for “The Tenants of Time” (Dutton), Mary McGarry Morris for “Vanished” (Viking), James Salter for “Dusk” (North Point Press), Thomas Savage for “The Corner of Rife and Pacific” (Morrow) and Isaac Bashevis Singer for “The Death of Methuselah” (Farrar Straus Giroux).

More than 200 novels and short story collections published in the United States during 1988 were considered for the awards, which were established as a tribute to William Faulkner who used his Nobel Prize winnings to support and encourage other writers. Four of the nominees will receive $2,500 prizes and the winner will receive $7,500.

A winner will be announced later this spring and all five of the nominated writers will receive prizes and read from their work at a ceremony at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington on May 13.
