Texas Women Set U.S. Record in 200-Yard Freestyle Relay

Senior Courtney Madsen paced a Texas 200-yard freestyle relay team that broke American and NCAA records Friday night in the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Leigh Ann Fetter, Julie Cooper, Jeanne Doolan and Madsen were timed in 1:28.90, breaking the record of 1:30.21 set by the Longhorns last year.

Olympian Mitzi Kremer of Clemson won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.78, breaking the NCAA record of 1:45.40 set by Tami Bruce of Florida in 1988.

Stanford’s Michelle Griglione won the 400 individual medley in 4:12.29, and teammate Jenna Johnson took the 100 butterfly in 53.24.

Stephanie Zunich of Florida won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.1. Freshman Kristen Linehan of Florida took the 100 backstroke in 54.98.

Florida won the 400 medley relay in 3:38.38.

With six swimming events to be completed today, Stanford led with 413 points; Florida was second with 388, and Texas, which has won the last five NCAA titles, was third with 377.
