What’s the sound when Doves thrash? When it’s this London quartet--led by brothers Ken and Brian Foreman--it’s something between T. Rex and Duran Duran, with a dose of the Clash to liven things up. This album picks up where the group’s impressive 1987 debut, “Bedrock Vice,” left off: forceful, melodic rock with lush (but not syrupy) arrangements, doing justice equally to thoughtful portrayals of childhood trauma (the explosive title track), adolescent Angst (the considerate “Sister Deals”) and a thoroughly adult overview (“Reprobate’s Hymn”). The first album got passed by; here’s a great chance to make up for that.
