Protesters from the environmental group Greenpeace chained themselves to a pier near Cork, Ireland, in an attempt to prevent the U.S. cruiser Yorktown from docking. Police in the southern Ireland port said that about a dozen demonstrators were involved in the protest and that after some scuffling with police, they were removed. The demonstrators continued their protest nearby, chanting slogans and singing peace songs, as the guided missile cruiser docked. Greenpeace said the Yorktown has nuclear capability, but Robert White, defense attache at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin, told RTE, Ireland’s national radio network, that the vessel is not carrying nuclear weapons.
