USD Men Upset Cal in Tennis

The University of San Diego men’s tennis team upset No. 1-ranked California, 5-4, Tuesday in Berkeley, handing the Bears only their second loss of the year.

No. 21 USD (17-4) split the singles and took two of three doubles matches.

“It’s not often you can upset the No. 1 team,” said Ed Collins, USD’s coach. “It may help our chances (to get into) the NCAA tournament.”

Chris Toomey, Mark Farren and Dan Mattera won twice for USD. In singles, Toomey defeated Carl Chang, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Chang is the older brother of pro Michael Chang; both Carl and Michael are former section singles champions from San Dieguito.

Farren defeated Chris Scherman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Mattera swept Matt Lucena, 6-3, 6-4. In doubles, Farren and Toomey defeated Chang and Curt Streeter, 7-6, 6-3, and Mattera and Dave Stewart defeated Lucena and Ed Marcum, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Auburn (9-3) defeated San Diego State, 6-3, in the first round of the UC Irvine tournament. Tole Markinkovic defeated Ian Russell, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 1 singles for SDSU (5-11). Joe McDonough defeated Rocky Mason, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 2. Bill Kearsley defeated Adrian Mogina, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 6. SDSU will play Weber State today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated host Clemson, 8-1, led by Sondra Mitchell and Kristin Hill.

Mitchell defeated Cathy Hofer at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Hill defeated Dinna Van Gulick at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Dorey Brandt and Hill defeated Mimi Burgos and Van Gulick, 7-6, 6-1.

The 18th-ranked Aztecs are 9-6.

MEN’S GOLF

A two-day total of 636 gave the University of San Diego 15th place at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Tex. New Mexico Junior College (623) won. USD’s top finisher was Geoffrey Dean, who tied for 17th with 156.

BASEBALL

San Diego State picked up an unearned run in the fifth inning and went on to defeat 11th-ranked Cal State Long Beach, 3-2, at Smith Field.

After the Aztecs (15-10) loaded the bases, Brian Grebeck, who had started the rally with a single, scored from third when pitcher Tom Urbani threw wildly to second on a pickoff attempt.

Jim Gibbs (1-0) was the winner. Dave Riddle struck out four in three innings for the save.

Chris Stout doubled in two runs in both the third and seventh innings as the University of San Diego defeated Gonzaga, 7-4, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

Pat Fitzsimons (6-1) pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits. USD is 12-11, Gonzaga 5-4.

Geoff Martinez and Kevin Tahan each hit two home runs to help USIU (9-21) halt a 13-game slide with a 10-8 victory over Wisconsin (3-9).

Tahan’s homers were his 10th and 11th and left him one behind the school season record set by Paul Sokolowski in 1980. Tahan was three for five with four RBIs.

AWARDS

Mia Labovitz, San Diego High’s kicker in football and a striker on the girls’ soccer team, will receive a silver bowl from Sports Illustrated for appearing in this week’s issue in the Faces in the Crowd section, a spokesman for the magazine said.
