One reputed gang member was killed and three others wounded in a burst of semiautomatic gunfire during a drive-by shooting believed to be in retaliation for a previous killing, Long Beach police said.

Ruben Lozano, 17, of Compton, was taken to Charter Suburban Hospital in Paramount, where he died from a wound he suffered in the 7 p.m. attack, said Long Beach police Detective George Fox. The shooting occurred outside an apartment complex where all the victims lived, police Lt. Howard Jenkins said.

Another teen-ager was hit in the chest and legs by at least five bullets and was in critical condition at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach, Jenkins said.

The shooting also wounded a teen-ager in the shin and another teen-ager in the toe, he said.

The attack, in which at least two semiautomatic weapons were fired, was believed to be in retaliation for a shooting two weeks ago that killed two members of a rival gang in Bellflower, Jenkins said.
