A pipe bomb exploded outside a crowded roller rink, police said Sunday.

No one was injured in the blast, but approximately 200 to 300 people were evacuated from the Aquarius Roll-A-Rena, 8992 La Mesa Blvd., shortly after the explosion at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

La Mesa police and sheriff’s arson investigators determined that the small bomb, made in a PVC pipe, had been placed near the south side of the building, then covered with pieces of scrap lumber. When the device exploded, fragments of wood were hurled up to 100 feet away, with some pieces landing in the nearby traffic lanes of La Mesa Boulevard, said a police spokeswoman. No cars were struck by the flying debris, she said.

Damage to the building was limited to minor scarring along the outside wall. There were no suspects and the motive for the bombing was unknown, police said.
