A Continental Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles was aborted early Monday when an engine malfunctioned moments after takeoff from Houston Intercontinental Airport, officials said. The plane returned safely to Houston, touching down just after midnight.

An air traffic controller said 121 people, including eight crew members, were aboard the Airbus A300.

Only 10 to 20 seconds after leaving the runway, the pilot radioed the airport tower, saying that one of the jet’s two engines was not working.

A Continental spokesman said the engine was not completely shut down but put on what would be the equivalent of idle.
