THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : UCI Ends Losing Streak With a Flourish, 20-9

UC Irvine scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 20-9 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Irvine.

Irvine (9-15-1) had 18 hits and broke a three-game losing streak. Al Rodriguez, a sophomore, had four hits and four runs batted in. Brian Young hit a home run, his fourth, for Irvine.

Rob Johnson (4-4) pitched four innings for the victory. Irvine scored in every inning. Pomona is 10-19.

In other nonconference baseball games:

Cal State Fullerton 5, South Alabama 3--Danny DeVille (4-0) pitched the first 8 2/3 innings and Sam Colarusso got a ground out with the bases loaded for Fullerton at Mobile.

Fullerton (19-10) scored three runs in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Ralph Ramirez opened the inning with a home run, his second this season. Randy Graves followed with a single, and Bobby Jones reached on an error. After two outs, Rex Peters reached on another error to load the bases. Brent Mayne then singled to center field to drive in two runs.

Rich Gonzales singled, Ramirez sacrificed, and after a ground out by Graves, Jones singled Gonzales home in the eighth for Fullerton.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 4, Point Loma Nazarene 2 (10 innings)--Kendall Casper’s two-run single in 10th inning broke a 2-2 tie at Point Loma. Starting pitcher Jim Dedrick went all the way and had 11 strikeouts for SCC (15-11, 5-2). Point Loma is 14-15 overall.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 10-1, Pacific Christian 0-0 (First game, 5 innings, mercy rule)--Susie Hopkins pitched a no-hitter in the first game and a three-hitter in the second game for host Southern California College. Hopkins had seven strikeouts in the first game and eight in the second. Christy George had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs in the first game. Cindy Salazar had an RBI single in the second game for SCC (10-12). PCC is 3-11.
