Two drivers and four students were injured Tuesday in unrelated school bus accidents in South Los Angeles, authorities reported. One of the drivers and her blind student, the only passenger on that bus, were reported in critical condition.

The latter were identified by a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman as Ann Suber, 50, and Somanea Khoeum, 13. The California Highway Patrol said their bus crashed into the rear of a disabled garbage truck shortly after 6 a.m. on Century Boulevard beneath the Harbor Freeway overpass.

Suber reportedly suffered two broken legs, deep cuts, internal injuries and a possibly crushed chest. She underwent surgery at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. The girl was taken to the same hospital with a broken left leg, multiple bruises and a possibly crushed chest.

Another driver and three children ages 5 to 10 were injured about 12:50 p.m. when a privately owned school bus struck a power pole at 98th Street and Vermont Avenue. Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the children were taken to King Hospital with moderate injuries. He said the driver, who was not identified, went to a private doctor.
