Cerritos : Dog Tag Fee Hike Studied as City Seeks New Service

Share

The Cerritos City Council tonight will discuss a proposal to raise dog license fees in connection with the city’s search for new animal control services after the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it can not provide services beyond July 1.

The city staff is recommending that the cost of an annual license for a dog not neutered or spayed be raised from $15 to $20 to help pay for a new animal control contract. Senior citizens would pay only $10. For dogs that have been neutered or spayed, the license fee would be raised from $7.50 to $10. Seniors would pay $5.

The last time the city increased such fees was in 1980, according to the staff report, which recommends that Cerritos contract with one of four different animal control providers. They are the city of Long Beach, the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society, Los Angeles County and the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority.
