David Covington, 16, was shot as he stood in a parking lot at Hope and 17th streets at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday. He died at UCI Medical Center about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Police Lt. Church Gibbs said.

Arrested were Augustine Gonzales, 22, of Garden Grove and an unidentified juvenile whose age and city of residence were not released by police. Gibbs said both were believed to be affiliated with a local street gang, but Covington was not.

“The victim knew the suspects from grade school days. They got into some kind of argument, and as Covington was about to leave the parking lot, the suspects produced a weapon and fired several shots, striking him once in the head,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said the two suspects were believed to have used a sawed-off .22 rifle, and escaped in Gonzales’ truck.
