Two youths died and two others were injured Thursday in an explosion believed caused by a homemade pipe bomb, police said.

The victims apparently were experimenting with the bomb when it went off in the enclosed patio of a house in southern San Jose, Police Capt. Kenneth Hawks said.

One of the dead may be as young as 10, and the other was a teen-ager, Hawks said.

The other two were taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, but a nursing supervisor would not release any information.

Two other youths in the house at the time of the explosion were unhurt. Police would not release the names of any of the youngsters.

The Police Department’s bomb squad remained at the scene several hours because of the possibility of a second, unexploded bomb inside the house, Hawks said.
