Favors a Spring Break in April

Share

This school year, spring break falls in April, halfway through the 20-week semester. The weather is better in April, and the timing is better, since we have just had several January and February holidays.

The attempt by some parents to make the separation of spring break and Easter a religious issue is absurd. If Easter would just stay put every year, there would be no problem. Kris Tine is quoted as saying, “They are trying to take the Lord away from us.” “They” are doing no such thing. Cliff Stadig, one of the five candidates challenging L.A. Board of Education member Julie Korenstein, has said the decision to move the spring break to April is “a liberal campaign of religious bias.”

I cannot see how having spring break in April in any way “makes worship more difficult and creates a problem for families planning vacations at that time.” Easter is always on a Sunday. No matter how much Easter zips around from March to April and back again, it is always on a Sunday. Sunday is not a school day. Therefore, having to go to school or work the next day would in no way interfere with a family’s ability to celebrate Easter. In fact, when Easter vacation surrounds Easter, the school term resumes the day after Easter anyway. So any travel would have to be done before Easter to get back in time for school.
