San Diego police officers shot and killed a man Monday night in San Ysidro after he twice tried to run them over with his car, authorities said.

Alvaro Vega-Haro, 39, of Tijuana, died of a single gunshot wound suffered after two on-duty officers fired several shots at him in the 100 block of Blanche Street, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The officers had tried to pull over Vega-Haro’s car shortly after 9 p.m. when they noticed two men fighting in the front seat. As the officers pursued the car, a passenger fell out the car’s side window, Cohen said.

After Vega-Haro drove around the block and struck an onlooker, he stopped his car at the officers’ request, Cohen said. As the officers walked toward the car, Vega-Haro twice drove at the two in apparent attempts to run them over, he said.

The officers, who were identified as Sgt. Rick Amos and Agent Richard Ensign, fired at Vega-Haro, who crashed into a parked car near a group of onlookers and died at the scene, Cohen said.

Amos and Ensign have been assigned to administrative duties until the case is reviewed by the police department’s homicide and internal affairs units and the district attorney’s office.
