Jeff Barry hit a home run in the sixth inning to help San Diego State defeat host New Orleans, 4-3. Lance Pinnell had two RBIs for the Aztecs (25-14). Plantenberg (4-3) was the winning pitcher. New Orleans is 15-19.

Senior Kevin Tahan hit his school-record-tying 12th homer of the year in the first inning, and collected three other hits in U.S. International University’s come-from-behind 7-6 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton.

Tahan, a senior from Patrick Henry, was 4 for 5 with two RBI, including two doubles.

USIU improved to 14-26; 25th-ranked Fullerton dropped to 23-14.

Point Loma Nazarene College lost to visiting Westmont College, 7-4 and 7-3, in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader. Point Loma Nazarene dropped to 17-20, 5-10. Westmont improved to 21-13, 10-5.

After host USD scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning for a two-run lead over Claremont-Mudd, the visitors rallied with three run for a 6-5 victory at Cunningham Stadium.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD needed only singles matches to defeat visiting UC Irvine, 6-0. Jennifer Larking defeated Courtney Weichsel, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1. The Toreras improved to 17-6.

The 15th-ranked San Diego State women’s team defeated host USIU, 5-1, in a nonconference match. Sondra Mitchell defeated USIU’s Diane Lowings, 6-4, 6-3, at No 1 singles.

MEN’S GOLF

U.S. International’s John Adams shot a one-under 71 as the Gulls won the Grand Canyon Invitational tournament in Phoenix by 14 strokes over Washington State. USIU was first with 856 points, USD was seventh (898) and Point Loma Nazarene College was 12th (950).

SOFTBALL

USD (19-20) swept a nonconference doubleheader from host La Verne, 2-1 and 5-1, behind the pitching of Lisa Ziomkowski and Jeanne Weinsheim.

VOLLEYBALL

Jeff Babcock had 15 kills and 17 digs to help UCSD defeat visiting La Verne, 15-4, 15-5, 15-9.
