College Roundup : Irvine Earns Doubleheader Split With Loyola
UC Irvine scored a run in the sixth inning to defeat Loyola Marymount, 1-0, in the second game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader Tuesday at UC Irvine. Loyola won the first game, 6-3. Both games were seven innings.
Billy Bardens singled to open the sixth for UC Irvine in the second game. He was sacrificed to second by Stacy Parker and went to third on an infield groundout by Jon Damuch. Al Rodriguez grounded to shortstop Kevin Van De Vake, who threw the ball away, allowing Bardens to score.
In the first game, Irvine led, 2-1 after four innings, but Brian Turang hit a two-run home run off loser Rob Johnson to give Loyola Marymount a 3-2 lead.
In another nonconference baseball game:
United States International University 7, Cal State Fullerton 6--USIU (14-26) scored three runs in the ninth for the victory at home. Brent Mayne and Dave Staton had hit home runs in the sixth to help Fullerton build a 6-4 lead going into the ninth.
