Head track Coach Pat Henry fired women’s track Coach Loren Seagrave today, saying it was in the best interests of Louisiana State University to get rid of the man who won four national championships and was named Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year six times.

“Loren has made tremendous contributions to the LSU track and field program,” Henry said. “It was a difficult decision to make but it is in the best interests of our athletes.”

No explanation was given, but Seagrave was earlier asked to resign by Athletic Director Joe Dean. The request for his resignation was apparently triggered by a misinterpretation of an all-night counseling session he had with one of his athletes, Seagrave said.

“He basically stipulated he thought there was a situation as was portrayed to him that had sexual overtones,” Seagrave said. “I clarified it immediately. There weren’t sexual overtones. There wasn’t a sexual deal about it.”

In announcing Seagrave’s termination, Henry made no mention of that incident.
