April Weather Returning to Pleasant Normal

After last week’s sizzle and this week’s drizzle, San Diegans can put away their weather score cards and look for a more predictable paradise this weekend.

Night and morning low clouds are expected to melt into pleasant days, with afternoon sunshine and mild temperatures throughout the county. The very un-April-like behavior of late, with its record-high temperatures one week and June gloom the next, is a thing of the past.

“Finally,” said National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara in a tone sounding something like relief. “We’re going to have more typical April weather to contend with this weekend.”

Shigehara recounted the dozens of phone calls he received over the past two weeks from people “yelling hooray for the heat wave” to still others “begging for more cloudy weather.”

Something for Everybody

“This weekend, we’ll have something for everybody,” he said. “We’ll have night and morning clouds, we’ll have warming temperatures a little above the norm, and we’ll have lots of daytime sunshine.”

A high-pressure system moving into San Diego will dissipate the murky skies and bring the warmer, sunnier weather, which should hold through the weekend, Shigehara said. The dome of warm air coming in will act as a mechanism to chase the clouds away, he said.

Highs along the beach will climb to the upper 60s today and level off at 70 degrees Saturday, the forecast says. The ocean-water temperature is 64 degrees and the surf is at 3 to 4 feet.

Coastal highs will range from 70 to 75 through Sunday, overnight lows from 57 to 62, Shigehara said.

Inland highs are expected to range from 76 to 82 the whole weekend, lows from 52 to 58.

Mountain highs are expected to range from the mid to upper 70s and lows from 42 to 52 tonight and Saturday. Daytime temperatures in the desert will struggle to reach 100 degrees, Shigehara said.

The normal for this time of April is 67 degrees, Shigehara said. The high at Lindbergh Field Thursday was 67, the first normal temperature all month.
