SDSU Signs Two to Play Basketball

Two community college players, Steve McClellan and Marty Dow, have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at San Diego State University.

McClellan, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward from Arizona Western, averaged 12.6 points and 10.2 rebounds and helped the Matadors win the Arizona state community college championship.

Dow, a 7-0 center from Northeast Oklahoma A&M;, averaged 10.1 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Stefan Mumaw, a 6-9 center from Irvine University High, signed with Christian Heritage.

Dawn Wood, a pitcher from Castle Park High, signed to play softball at Arizona State. Wood tied a national record last season by throwing consecutive perfect games for the Trojans.

BASEBALL

San Diego State (25-16) lost its second consecutive game to host New Orleans, 5-1. Jeff Barry scored the Aztecs’ only run, when he doubled, stole third and came home on an errant throw from the Privateers’ catcher.

Southern California College scored three runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth to defeat visiting UC San Diego, 7-6. Dave Ligerman went three for four. Jim Martinez went two for two with two RBIs and Gary Fessia was two for four with two RBIs for the Tritons (17-13).

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego won at No. 2 through No. 6 singles and defeated No. 19 Long Beach State, 5-1, at USD’s west courts. Chris Toomey, Mark Farren, J.R. Farren, Dan Mattera and Curtis Dadian won for No. 15 USD (22-6). The 49ers fell to 14-10.
