Fire swept through the 50-year-old capitol building of Cebu early Friday, causing more than $1 million damage.
No one was injured in the fire, which broke out about 2 a.m. in the offices of the provincial education department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Provincial Gov. Emilio Osmena estimated damage to the three-story structure at $714,000. Other officials said loses of medicines, books and other supplies totaled $700,000.
Osmena said it would take at least a year to restore the damaged portions of the building in Cebu.
