Soviets Will Fight in U.S. as Pros
Soviet boxers, a force in Olympic and amateur competition, will fight professionally for the first time under an agreement between a U.S. boxing promoter and the Soviet Boxing Federation.
Lou Falcigno of Momentum Enterprises announced the agreement Monday involving Momentum and Sovintersport, the Soviet agency responsible for the recent commercialization of Soviet sports.
Falcigno said that six Soviet boxers would be chosen from a crop competing in amateur tournaments during the next five months. Those six would live and train in the United States with the aim of fighting as professionals against U.S. opponents before the end of the year.
