David Bond; Film, TV Actor Since the ‘40s

David Bond, a gangly character actor who began appearing in films in the 1940s and on episodic television a decade later, died Sunday at Humana Hospital in West Hills of the complications of leukemia.

Bond, 74, born Alfred Allegro, appeared on Broadway before moving west for motion pictures, starring in New York as Iago in John Carradine’s production of “Othello” and with Billie Burke in “Accidentally Yours.”

In Los Angeles, he established a Hollywood Shakespeare Festival that toured Southern California, but most of his professional life here involved motion pictures and television programs. In pictures, he was seen in “The Late George Apley,” “The Private Affairs of Bel Ami,” “Joan of Arc,” “The Great Caruso,” “Julius Caesar,” “House Calls” and several more.

His TV credits involved regular appearances on several old series, among them “Dragnet,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Dobie Gillis” and “The Untouchables.”

Survivors include a sister and two brothers, who ask contributions be made in his name to the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills.
