Mandan, the second California condor to be conceived and born in captivity, was sleeping peacefully after hatching, officials at the San Diego Wild Animal Park said. The chick, which hatched after 57 days of incubation, underwent minor surgery for a stomach opening. Stitches were made to make sure the chick’s yolk sack is closed up and to prevent infection, said park spokesman Tom Hanscom. He said that they will not know if Mandan is male or female for six to eight weeks, when they will perform blood tests. The chick was named by California Department of Fish and Game biologists, after the American Indian tribe native to the Eastern Rockies, Hanscom said.
