Jackson Says He’ll Leave SDSU Basketball Team

San Diego State freshman Dana Jackson announced Thursday that he will not return to the Aztec basketball team next season and plans to transfer.

Jackson, a Chicago native, played in 28 of SDSU’s 29 games last season, averaging 13 minutes, 2.5 points and 3.0 rebounds. He started four games.

“Basically, Dana felt that he wanted to continue his collegiate career closer to home,” SDSU Coach Jim Brandenburg said in a statement. “We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Anticipating the departure of Scott Barrick, who quit San Diego State’s football team April 3 for personal reasons, the Aztecs signed David Lowery of Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills High.

Lowery, 6-feet, 185 pounds, threw for 3,325 yards and 29 touchdowns in leading Trabuco Hills (12-2) to the Southern Section Division 8 championship.

Lowery also might play baseball for the Aztecs. As a third baseman/pitcher this season, he is 6-1 with a .430 batting average, five home runs and 27 RBIs.

Point Loma’s Monica Filer will sign a national letter of intent with Oregon State this morning, Point Loma Coach Lee Trepanier said. Filer, a 5-foot-7 point guard, led Point Loma to a 32-2 record this season, averaging 22 points and 11 assists a game. Filer set a state record this season with 390 assists. During her four-year varsity career, Point Loma went 124-6.

BASEBALL

Chapman College scored four runs in the first and six in the fifth en route to a 13-4 victory over visiting UC San Diego. Mike Halweg (5-3) went the distance for Chapman College (16-18). Gary Fessia (0-3) took the loss for UC San Diego (18-15), ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State (17-29-1) dropped a doubleheader to Cal State Fullerton, losing the first game, 6-1, and the second, 1-0. Fourth-ranked Fullerton (39-9, 23-5) was led by pitchers Anjei Bryant and Ann Van Dortrecht. Bryant (21-4) allowed five hits in the first game, and Van Dortrecht (15-4) pitched a one-hitter in the second.

COLLEGE BOWLING

After one day of bowling, San Diego State is seventh place at the 12-team National Collegiate Bowling Championships, which will continue today and Saturday in Las Vegas. SDSU compiled a 3,578 four-game total, compared to the 3,877 by first-place Cal State Fullerton. Bart Mills’ 771 leads SDSU.
