College Roundup : Cal Lutheran Extends Reign in GSAC Tennis

Cal Lutheran won five of six singles matches to defeat Azusa Pacific, 7-2, and clinch its third consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis title Friday at Cal Lutheran.

Tony Cohen defeated Greg Johnson, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match and teamed with Matt Simpson for a doubles victory to lead Cal Lutheran (14-9, 7-0).

The Kingsmen will defend its NAIA District 3 championship May 11-13 at Christ College in Irvine. The tournament winner will advance to the NAIA finals.

BASEBALL

Claremont 20, The Master’s 18--First baseman Peter Wilson forged a tie with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Master’s went on to lose the nonconference game in 10 innings in Newhall.

The home run by Wilson was his second of the game and 10th of the season. Tony Jaime and Mark Boyle also hit home runs for the Mustangs (14-16-1).

Six Master’s pitchers yielded 20 hits.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 4, Bakersfield 0--De Dow (21-7) pitched a five-hitter and did not allow a runner past second base in a Western State Conference game at Bakersfield.

Rosa Jimenez’s triple scored Kelly Kaufman with Moorpark’s first run in the second inning. Chris Signer’s seventh-inning triple scored Missy Cress, and Moorpark added two more runs in the inning on an error.

The victory kept the Raiders (28-10, 10-1) a game ahead of College of the Canyons in the WSC standings. Moorpark has not allowed a run in its 10 conference wins.

College of the Canyons 3, Valley 0--Freshman right-hander Michelle Ruffner pitched a two-hitter and struck out four for Canyons in the WSC game at Canyons.

Michele Wood provided a two-run single for Canyons (23-14, 9-2) in the first inning and was the only Lady Cougar to collect two hits.

Valley dropped to 12-22, 5-6 in conference play.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Long Beach City, 15-9, 15-9, 15-7--Rico Guimares had 17 kills, Terry Schrumpf had 15 and Tim Vincent added 14 as Pierce swept a South Coast Conference match at Long Beach.

Turhan Douglas and Corey Davidson each had seven blocks to lead Pierce, which improved to 15-2.
