Foot Patrol Urged for Park

Two Lawndale city commissioners have proposed increased security measures to fight gang activity and vandalism at Jane Addams Park.

At Thursday’s City Council meeting, Parks Commissioner Ronald Maxwell and Planning Commission Chairman Gary McDonald asked that a Sheriff’s Department foot patrol be assigned to the park to help keep it safe for youth and community activities.

Both commissioners also called for stiff penalties for vandalism and graffiti. Maxwell suggested increasing fines and sentencing offenders to clean up graffiti. McDonald said parents of offenders should have to pay for repairs necessitated by vandalism, including the replacement of several full-grown trees he said were destroyed by vandals.

Meanwhile, the city is awaiting an analysis by the Sheriff’s Department of proposals to emphasize crime control rather than traffic enforcement in the allocation of deputies.
