From Times staff and wire service reports

Fourteen people, members of two Fullerton families, escaped unharmed early today from their burning wood-frame home at 109 N. Jefferson Ave., city officials said. The blaze, which broke out about 5 a.m., caused about $60,000 damage, said Sylvia Palmer, city spokeswoman.

“The families told firefighters they were asleep when the fire broke out but that they were awakened by the sound of the fire in the attic and ceiling,” Palmer said. No one was injured in the blaze, she said.

Palmer said the Fullerton Fire Department had the blaze under control within 20 minutes. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, she said.

Eight adults and six children were tenants in the building, Palmer said. The Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross said it is providing food, shelter and clothing for them.
