Dana Point Man Killed as Scaffold Falls
A Dana Point man was one of two workers killed Monday morning when steel scaffolding collapsed at an eight-story building under construction here, dropping them about 75 feet to the ground.
The scaffolding may not have been properly bolted to the building, Long Beach Fire Capt. Brad Wilson said: “We didn’t see any pins or bolts where there were supposed to be bolts.”
The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. at Lakewood Boulevard and Carson Street near the Long Beach Municipal Airport, where a complex is being built for McDonnell-Douglas Real Estate Co.
15-Foot-Wide Scaffolding
The victims were at about the seventh-floor level when the 15-foot-wide scaffolding collapsed, Wilson said.
Wesley Thomas Davis, 28, of Dana Point was taken to Doctors Hospital in Lakewood, where he was pronounced dead shortly after noon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The other victim, about 50 and not identified, was trapped for about 4 hours under the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene.
One man worked for a glass company doing subcontract work, and the other worked for the company that rented out the scaffolding, a federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration official said.
