Gunfire wracked a car parked near the Sunset Strip in Hollywood early Tuesday, killing a woman and critically wounding a Los Angeles man, police said.

The dead woman, about 25, whose identity was not released by the county coroner’s office, was shot several times, police said.

Her companion was identified as Shannon Thames, 23, of Los Angeles. Thames, who was also shot several times, was reported in critical but stable condition after surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

“It appears as though (the victims) possibly met someone there,” Detective Dennis Kilcoyne said. “The male victim may have left the car to talk to somebody.”

Drugs were “possibly involved,” Kilcoyne said, although detectives found no narcotics at the shooting scene.

The couple had left a nightclub, investigators said, and had gone to a late model Mercedes-Benz parked in the 1500 block of Crescent Height Boulevard. The shootings took place about 2:20 a.m., police said. The woman died in the front seat. Thames was found behind the car.

Investigators declined to identify the weapon used or to say which nightclub the couple had visited before they were shot.
