L.A. County Proclaims Victory Over Oriental Fruit Fly Invasion

Share

Los Angeles County agricultural officials announced that the latest infestation of the Oriental fruit fly has ended with the eradication of the pest.

Four flies were found in a 98-square-mile area of Hacienda Heights and an 86-square-mile area of Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino, triggering a “very successful male annihilation technique,” said Agricultural Commissioner E. Leon Spaugy.

The crop-eating pest has invaded the county more than two dozen times in the last two decades, and was successfully eradicated each time, Spaugy said.
