POWAY — An accidental fire caused about $200,000 damage to the Poway home of former Padre second baseman Alan Wiggins, police and fire officials said Sunday.
The fire started about 8:37 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen of the house at 14321 Twisted Branch Road, according to Sgt. Joseph Canchola of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The San Diego Fire Department was called to help put out the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the interior of the house.
Arson and explosives investigators called to the scene determined that the cause was accidental, Canchola said.
Poway fire officials and sheriff’s personnel said Sunday that they were unsure who, if anyone, was at home when the fire started, but Wiggins was on the scene an hour later, when arson investigators arrived.
Wiggins, 31, played second base for the Padres from 1981 to 1985, when a recurring drug problem prompted the Padres to trade him to the Baltimore Orioles. He played for the Orioles from 1985 to 1987, before moving back to the San Diego area.
