College Roundup : Moorpark Wins 3rd Softball Title in a Row

De Dow gave up one hit and struck out seven in five innings as Moorpark College defeated host Cuesta, 7-1, Tuesday to clinch its third consecutive Western State Conference softball title.

Moorpark has won five of the past six WSC titles.

With the win, the Lady Raiders (13-1 in conference play) advance to the Southern California regional playoffs, which begin May 10. Moorpark (32-10), which has won nine games in a row, set a single-season record for victories.

Dow (25-7) left after the fifth inning, giving way to Danielle Devan, who gave up nine hits in two innings of relief.

Rustie Stevens homered for the Lady Raiders’ only extra-base hit to lead a nine-hit Moorpark attack.

GOLF

Dave Berganio of Mission College, a freshman from Alemany High, fired a three-under-par 69 Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole total of 142 and win individual honors in the Southern California Junior College Golf Championships at Singing Hills Country Club in El Cajon.

Berganio led Mission to a fifth-place finish. The Free Spirit finished with a 763 total, 34 shots behind first-place Canyons (729).

Canyons, which finished third in the Western State Conference, will participate in the state team championships Monday at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.

Bob Riggins led Canyons with 69-74--143, followed by teammates Wayne Merich and Ralph Fritts, who finished at 145.

Jamey Forsyth of Mission finished at 149 and will join Berganio in the individual competition.

BASEBALL

Harbor 17, Mission 4--Harbor collected 11 hits off four Mission pitchers in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Harbor.

Freshman right-hander Chris Romo (1-8) took the loss for Mission (10-21, 8-11).

Harbor is 17-2 in conference play and has clinched the title. Mission still has an outside chance at a playoff berth but must defeat visiting Harbor on Thursday.
