Highways’ First Season Begins With Series of Short Works

Highways opens its first season in Santa Monica tonight. Most performances begin at 8:30 p.m. Tickets range from $5-$10. Information: (213) 453-1755.

The May and June schedule:

Today through Sunday: Short works by a total of 75 performance artists in six events.

Friday: Cinco de Mayo performances.

Next Thursday through May 13 and May 18-20: “Jupiter 35,” by Los Angeles Poverty Department, a group of artists and homeless people directed by John Malpede.

May 15: Standup comedy by SubGenius Church preacher St. Jaynor Hypercleats.

May 21: “Steel Blue Water: The Shipbuilders’ Play.” By the Theatre Workers Project featuring shipbuilders from Todd Shipyards in San Pedro.

May 25-28: Car Pool, performances by Suchi Branfman, Linda Carmella Sibio, Dan Kwong, Linda Hammett and Keith Antar Mason.

June 1-25: “Ecce Lesbo, Ecce Homo,” gay/lesbian festival.

June 1-2, 8-9: “World Without End,” written and performed by New York playwright and performance artist Holly Hughes.

June 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 24-25: “Intimacies,” written and performed by theater artist/AIDS activist Michael Kearns.

June 4: “Literary Jam,” featuring readings by Terry Wolverton, Jacqueline de Angelis, Bia Lowe and Holly Hughes.

June 5, 12, 19: “Meet the Mormons,” Les Mormons, Curtis York and Robert Daniels, in a cabaret performance.

June 15-16, 22-23: “Talking About Talking: The Power to Shape the World,” written and performed by Robin Podolsky and Ayofemi Stowe Folayan.

June 18: “Three Gay Sons Read on Father’s Day.” Readings by L.A. writers Michael Lassell, Samir Hachem and Doug Sadownick, organized by Jim Pickett.

June 26-28: English artist Shaun Caton (June 26) and Irish artists Tara Babel (June 27), and Andre Stitt (June 28).

Movement classes: With Naomi Goldberg: May 13, 20 and 27, 10:30 a.m. With Tina Gerstler: June 10, 17 and 24, 10:30 a.m.
