Sergio Rubio, a defender on the Chivas soccer club of Guadalajara, played a key role--one he would like to forget--as the Chilean World Cup team scored a 2-1 victory over his team in the Santa Ana Camel Cup final Wednesday night before an estimated 7,500 fans at Santa Ana Stadium.

Rubio, who was trying to steer away a long pass from Chile’s Raul Ormeno with six minutes gone in the game, accidentally headed the ball over goalkeeper Estefano Rodriguez’s head and into his own net.

The goal proved to be the pivotal score of the game as Chile, which extended its lead to 2-0 after 11 minutes of the second half, used an aggressive, hustling defense to keep Chivas from mounting an effective offensive attack for most of the game.

Rodriguez, who finished the first half with three saves, prevented another Chilean goal 19 minutes later when he made a diving save of Jorge Aravena’s 25-yard free kick from just outside the penalty area.

Aravena’s scoring chance was set up when Jaime Ramirez was tripped by a Chivas defender as Ramirez was trying to penetrate into the penalty area.

Chivas started showing some offensive spark during the period’s final minutes but was unable to come up with a tying score. With seven minutes remaining, Chilean goalie Roberto Rojas saved a close-in header by Javier Aguirre.

Rojas denied Chivas another score a minute later when he made a sprawling save of Omar Arellano’s rising kick from just inside the penalty area. Two minutes later, Chivas just missed again when Demetrio Madero’s shot from five yards out carried over the net.

Jorge Aravena scored Chile’s second goal with 11 minutes elapsed in the second half when his 35-yard free kick was deflected past a diving Rodriguez into the net.

Chivas narrowed the lead to 2-1 with 23 minutes remaining on Aguirre’s penalty kick that deflected into the net off the hands of a diving Rojas.

Aguirre’s score was set up when Benjamin Galindo, one of four Mexican national team members on the Chivas roster, was tripped in the penalty area as he was moving into position for a shot.
