Area Roundup : County’s First Open Squash Tournament to Begin Today

The first major open squash tournament in Orange County history begins today at the Sporting House in Newport Beach.

The WORLDSQUASH Cinco De Mayo Squash Fiesta Internacionale, which begins at 5 p.m., is an amateur tournament with 100 players competing in 10 divisions.

There will be four age groups, four open and two ladies’ divisions.

Among the competitors will be Dennis Marable of Huntington Beach, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 35-and-over division.

The tournament, which is free to the public, continues through Sunday.

The U.S. national water polo team will make its only Orange County appearence of the year tonight at Newport Harbor High School. The U.S. team will meet the Cuban national team at 7 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

There will be two World Boxing Organization titles on the line Saturday when professional boxing comes to Santa Ana Stadium.

Mauricio Aceves of Mexico takes on Amancio Castro of Colombia for the vacant WBO lightweight title. Aceves is 32-3 with 21 knockouts and Castro is 43-3 with 34 knockouts.

Genaro Leon (26-2) of Mexico takes on Danny Garcia (19-3) of Puerto Rico for the vacant WBO welterweight title.

Two 10-round lightweight fights are on the undercard. Rodolfo Gonzalez of Mexico fights Angel Hernandez of Texas and Rogelio Monteregro of Guadalajara battles Danny Robins of Arizona.

The first of the four fights starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 and $40 for ringside and $20 for general admission.

Orange Coast College will take part in the Southern California community college volleyball championships today at El Camino College in Torrance.

Orange Coast (19-1) is the top-seeded team. Los Angeles Pierce (18-2) is seeded second and Long Beach (13-7) third. Orange Coast will play West Valley of San Jose at 10 a.m. in the first round in the single-elimination tournament. L.A. Pierce will play Long Beach at 2 p.m., and the winners will play at 7 p.m. for the championship.

The Southern Pacific karate tournament, which features students from age 6 to adult, will take place Sunday at Costa Mesa High School, beginning at 10 a.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m.

The top six finishers in each bracket qualify for the Western regional finals in July in San Diego. Tickets, which are $3 for ages 6 to 15 and $5 for those 16 and older, will be on sale at the door. Children under 6 will be admitted free. For further information, call 826-2330 or 957-0178.

A free fly casting clinic sponsored by the Fly Fishers Club of Orange County is scheduled for noon Sunday at Twin Lakes Park in Garden Grove.

Alan and Barbara Rohrer will serve as chief instructors for the clinic that will conclude at 4 p.m. The instructors will be at the south end of the lake, located on the corner of Lampson and Haster streets.

Mark McMillin of Bonita, who pioneered the first Porsche-powered Class 2 vehicle in the sport of off-road racing, will serve as the grand marshal Sunday for the Volkswagen Spring Jamboree at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Since 1985, McMillin has competed in off-road unlimited single-seat class, winning the Baja 1000 in 1985 and ’86. McMillin will have his car on display at the show, which will feature dealer and manufacturer displays, engine pull contests and awards for vintage Volkswagens.

Cycle News Night at the weekly speedway motorcycle races at the Orange County Fairgrounds will feature a people’s choice motorcycle show in which fans can enter their motorcycles for judging and awards. Signups for the show begin tonight at 6:30, and racing is scheduled to begin at 8.
