Hospital Reveals Bush’s Mother Suffered Stroke

GREENWICH, Conn. — President Bush’s mother remained in fair condition today at Greenwich Hospital near her Connecticut home, having suffered what doctors believe was a slight stroke, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Dorothy Walker Bush, 87, continued to improve after undergoing a series of tests Tuesday, including a CT scan, a spinal tap, chest X-rays and a heart echogram, spokeswoman Mimi Grady said.
Grady, who had not disclosed such details Tuesday, said Mrs. Bush was admitted to the hospital Monday night with “evidence of a slight thrombotic stroke involving her right leg, which was complicated by a temperature of 102 degrees.” She was transported by ambulance because of her frail condition.
By today she was alert and was eating, though she remained on intravenous fluids and antibiotics, Grady said. Her temperature had declined to 99 to 100 degrees and her “neurological process is improving” despite weakness remaining in the right leg, Grady said.
The White House announced Tuesday that doctors expected her to be able to return home this week.
