Three major league baseball players--Jose Canseco, Andre Dawson and John Candelaria-- learned Tuesday that they will require surgery.

Canseco, of the Oakland Athletics, will have an operation today to remove part of a bone in his left wrist and will be out of the lineup for at least six more weeks.

Canseco, who became the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season last year while leading the A’s to the American League pennant, has been sidelined all season by the wrist injury.

Dawson, the Chicago Cubs’ leader in home runs and runs batted in, will have surgery to remove torn cartilage in his right knee and will be out for at least a month, the team said.

Dawson was put on the 21-day disabled list, and the Cubs recalled outfielder Phil Stephenson from their Iowa farm team.

Candelaria, suffering from an inflamed right knee and ineffective in his last two starts for the New York Yankees, will undergo arthroscopic surgery and was put on the 15-day disabled list.

He probably miss at least a month, team officials said.

Meanwhile, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Canseco was fined $500 for driving at speeds exceeding 125 m.p.h. on I-95 in February. Canseco had been found guilty of reckless driving after a nonjury trial May 1.
