THE PREPS : Roundup : Leach Wins Pacific Coast Tennis Title With Ease
Jon Leach of Laguna Beach eased to victory for the second consecutive year in the Pacific Coast League individual tennis tournament.
Leach, a sophomore, defeated Randy Ivey of Woodbridge, 6-3, 6-0, in the final Tuesday at Laguna Beach High School. Lee Kirner and Aaron Brauer of Laguna Beach won the doubles title, defeating Alex Steinhardt and Chris Emery of Woodbridge, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Laguna Beach and Woodbridge finished tied for first in the team standings with 9-1 records during the regular season.
In the semifinals of the Empire League tennis championships:
Top-seeded Jon Imel of Los Alamitos defeated Ryan Banderas of Katella, 6-1, 6-1, in a semifinal match at Tennis Land in Anaheim. In the other semifinal, Matt Huddleston of El Dorado defeated teammate Craig O’Neill, 6-2, 6-4.
Top-seeded Larry Queen and Jeff Bailes of El Dorado defeated teammates Rohit Sabnis and Sherman Hsieh ,6-1, 6-3.
John Hawley and Take Katsube of Esperanza defeated Danny Su and Scott Whan of El Dorado, 6-4, 6-2.
In the semifinals of the Sea View League tennis championships:
Top-seeded Brett Hansen of Newport Harbor defeated Devon Bowen of Estancia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, in a semifinal match at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.
Third-seeded Willie Dann of University defeated Chris Rabbitt of Newport Harbor, 7-6, 6-0, in the other semifinal match.
In the quarterfinals of the South Coast League tennis championships:
Top-seed and defending champion Ben Stevens of Dana Hills advanced from the round of 16 and defeated Pat Bray of Mission Viejo, 6-0, 6-0, at Mission Viejo to advance to the semifinals.
