Chicago Cubs slugging outfielder Andre Dawson had athroscopic surgery to remove cartilage from his right knee today, the team said.

“The prognosis is good,” said Dr. Michael Schafer, who performed the 90-minute operation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and predicted Dawson would require about four weeks of rehabilitation.

Schafer removed a tear of the cartilage on the outer side of the knee in the back and an acute tear of cartilage on the outside of the knee in the front, as well as debris from a cyst, the Cubs said.

The cyst may require additional surgery after the season.
