UCI Pre-College The courses are designed to help prepare students to meet the increasingly selective admission standards for competitive universities and to perform successfully at them. Students have an opportunity to explore future education and career options and will select one core course area fast-paced math, critical thinking and writing or speech and theater, and two or three elective courses.

FAST-PACED MATH COURSES:

Math 43 Pre-Algebra An introductory course providing the background necessary to prepare for formal algebra course work. Prerequisite: completion of 7th grade.

Math 45 Algebra I Introduction to the methods and languages of algebra, properties of numbers, fractions, factoring, solving and graphing linear equations. Prerequisite: completion of pre-algebra.

Math 47 Geometry Includes elementary logic, deductive reasoning, congruent triangles, parallel lines and parallelograms, circles, ratios, proportions, similar polygons, geometric constructions and coordinate geometry. Prerequisite: Algebra I.

Math 49 Algebra II Continuation of Math 45. Properties of numbers, fractions, factoring, solving and graphing linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, polynomials and rational algebraic expression. Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry.

Math 51 Pre-calculus An intensive review of elementary functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry, fundamental concepts, polynomial and rational functions, trigonometric functions, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series. Prerequisite: Algebra II.

WRITING AND CRITICAL THINKING COURSES:

Thinking and Writing WR 30A Designed to develop reading, critical thinking and writing strategies necessary for academic success. Emphasis is on writing as a tool for learning that fosters critical thinking.

Thinking and Computer-Aided Writing WR30B Same as 30A, except that course includes introduction to writing composition software. In addition to writing instruction class also includes a computer lab component where students learn about writing software application. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of a personal computer. Lab fee: $35

Math Tutorial: Review of Quantitative Skills-Math 10 For students needing extra help in math. A review of arithmetic, geometry and elementary algebra skills; topics include integers, fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, polynomials and linear equations, and inequalities.

Writing Tutorial WR 10 For students needing extra help in critical thinking and verbal skills. Writing emphasis on paragraph and short theme organization. Review of punctuation, grammar, sentences, and paragraph writing with special emphasis on American idioms and complex sentence structure.

COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES:

Introduction to Computers ICS 10 Basic introduction to computers for students with little or no previous experience. Students learn the basics of opening a file, storage and retrieval of files and printing of files. Through selected computer games students learn the basics of software application. Lab fee: $45

Intermediate Computers-Principles of Design Creative computer course in which students learn to utilize the software program “Hypercard” to design a new application. No previous computer training required but familiarity with the MacIntosh computer would be helpful.

Applied Pascal ICS 27 Students learn Pascal and principles of physics simultaneously. A unique computer program developed by a UCI professor enables students to graphically represent and observe principles of physics in action. Lab Fee: $45.

ADVANCED COMPUTERS:

Directed Study of Computer Applications For the student who has already had extensive experience with computers. In a small group seminar with a UCI professor students review Pascal and design a computer program that can teach others. Prerequisite is consent of Pre-College Director. Lab Fee: $45

International Relations IR 12 Based on the Peace Project and research of a UCI professor. Students view, discuss and debate pros and cons of selected international issues. Course utilizes videotaped interviews of famous international figures and a computer system enabling discussion with foreign students. Lab Fee: $10.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Health and Fitness PE10 Aerobic exercise and group games plus discussions on healthful living.

Sailboating PE11 Students learn the basics of rigging and sailing a small sailboat. Students must pass a swimming test on the first day of class in which they tread water for one minute and swim one 25-meter lap in a pool. Class meets at UCI Marine Base. PREPARATION FOR COLLEGES AND CAREERS:

Career Exploration CC23 Course deals with principles of identifying and selecting career options. Includes guest lectures from professionals in careers such as engineering, law, computer science, business and writing.

Vocational Testing and Advisement CC24 Course by arrangement. Requires four-five hours of individual testing and advisement. Students take a vocational test utilizing an interactive computer program (SIGI). Students are helped to identify careers, interests, priorities and talents.

Strategies for Success at Selective Colleges and Universities CC25 Covers the ins and outs of getting into a selective college or university. Topics include how to write a college admission essay, interviewing, scholarships and financial aid, selecting a university, selecting a major, study and learning skills for college. Especially recommended for students going into the 10th grade. Course includes individualized academic counseling.

SAT Prep-Principles of Math of Verbal Problem Solving Provides extra help in developing skills for analyzing and solving complex math problems and identifying key concepts in reading materials. The techniques in this course are applicable to test-taking in academic courses and for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Youth Outrigger Canoeing Club Students will learn beginning to advanced outrigger canoeing techniques and competitive skills to prepare for summer canoe races. Aqua Camp Participants will spend half days on the water learning sailing, canoeing, rowing, basic boating skills and water safety. Surf Camp Course will allow students to tune up surfing abilities, learn proper wave judgment and surfing techniques under adult supervision.
