Scattered showers and gusty winds will continue through Mother’s Day weekend, the National Weather Service predicts.

The low-pressure system that brought sporadic light showers Thursday has moved slowly eastward toward Utah, leaving behind partly cloudy skies and cool and breezy weather today.

The low-pressure system, which originated in the Gulf of Alaska, is expected to stall and return to the coast, bringing a 20% chance of intermittent light showers late Saturday, forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. The possibility of showers will increase Sunday to 30%.

“Mother’s Day weekend won’t be too nice,” Shigehara said. “It’s not the worst, but it’s not the best, either.”

Winds are also expected to pick up, gusting to 25 m.p.h. in San Diego and up to 30 m.p.h. in the mountains and deserts.

Temperatures are also a bit cooler than average for May, Shigehara said.

“It’s not following the normal pattern for May,” Shigehara said. “Today might be the nicest day through the weekend. We should be at 68 degrees. But we struggled to hit 65 degrees” Thursday, he said, and “we should be 3 to 4 degrees warmer today.”

Temperatures at the beaches will be 62 to 66 degrees through Sunday. The surf, coming from south of New Zealand, will be high, ranging 5 to 7 feet. Temperatures along the coastal strip will range from 63 to 68 degrees through the weekend, with nighttime lows of 48 to 56 degrees.

The inland region will probably reach 67 to 72 degrees and drop to 40 to 50 degrees at night.

Highs in the mountains may get up to the high 40s this weekend, and will probably drop to 28 to 35 degrees overnight, causing concern about frost damage for Julian apple growers.

The desert, which normally reach highs of 93 to 94 degrees this time of year, will only reach 75 to 80 degrees. Weekend lows of 50 to 60 degrees are expected.
