The season ended in the second round of the NCAA championship tournament Thursday for both the San Diego State and University of San Diego women’s tennis teams.

SDSU was defeated by No. 1 Stanford, 9-0, and USD lost to host Florida, 6-1, in Gainesville, Fla.

The Aztecs (17-10) won only one set, Michelle Apra defeating Kylie Johnson, 6-3, in the first set at No. 6 singles. Johnson won following sets, 6-4, 6-1.

The lone winner for USD (18-8) was Tonya Fuller, who defeated Florida’s Holly Danforth, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 3 singles.

John Cress and Hans Hoegstedt of Point Loma Nazarene advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles at the NAIA District 3 men’s championships at Westmont.

PLNC is tied for third with Asuza Pacific, behind leader Cal Lutheran and second-place Westmont.

FOOTBALL

The New Orleans Saints picked up former San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos off waivers from San Francisco. While at SDSU, Santos broke 27 NCAA records. Most noteworthy was his 11,425 passing yards. Despite his college statistics, Santos was a 10th-round 1988 draft pick by the Saints, who released him at training camp.

SOFTBALL

USIU is in jeopardy of ending its season with a 14-game losing streak. The Gulls lost Nos. 11 and 12 in a row to No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona (40-21), 8-0 and 2-0.

The Gulls (15-36-1) actually had a chance to score first, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. But they stranded the runners, and the doubleheader went downhill from there.
