Although the number of AIDS cases recorded in Los Angeles County last month dropped from the one-month record set in March, year-to-date cases are up 18% over the same period in 1988, health officials announced Friday.

The Department of Health Services recorded 192 new cases in April, compared to 229 in March.

Health officials said caution should be used in interpreting monthly AIDS statistics because they can vary month to month due to a variety of factors. Long-term trends, they said, provide a more complete analysis.

Through the end of April, 794 cases had been recorded this year, compared to 673 for the same period in 1988.

A total of 6,929 AIDS cases had been recorded in the county through the end of April. Of that number, all but 60 involved adults.

The overall mortality rate was 65%, accounting for 4,484 deaths.
