Loyola Marymount University held its 77th commencement Saturday in the Sunken Gardens on campus. Degrees were conferred on 1,341 students, including 328 master’s degrees.

Jane Pisano, president of the Los Angeles 2000 Committee, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree. She told the graduates: “Los Angeles has always been a place where people have dreamed big dreams and willed them to happen. In doing so, they have built a great city. Now it’s your turn. What will you do with the city that’s coming your way?”

Honorary Degrees:

Pisano.

Monika Hellwig, professor of theology at Georgetown University.

Edward J. Hogan, president of Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays.

Other Graduations:

The Claremont Graduate School held its 62nd commencement Saturday. Advanced degrees were awarded to 196 students. Honorary degrees were awarded to American Federation of Teachers president Albert Shanker, chairman and chief executive officer of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Assn. Clifton Wharton, Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, along with keynote speaker Hanna Holborn Gray, president of the University of Chicago.
