College Baseball : Titans Lose, Fall Out of Playoff Consideration

Fresno State scored three runs in the eighth inning, then hung on for a 9-8 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday at Fresno.

It was the third one-run loss of the weekend for Fullerton (30-27, 10-11), which finished in fourth place in the conference and out of consideration for a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoff spot. Las Vegas defeated Cal State Long Beach, 8-6, to move into third.

Eddie Zosky had a three-run double as Fresno State broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth off loser Danny DeVille. Fullerton then rallied in the ninth but came up a run short.

Mate Borgogno singled with one out and scored on a double by Brent Mayne. Rex Peters struck out and Dave Staton was walked intentionally. Rich Gonzales singled home Mayne to cut the lead to 9-8, but Paul Bunch flied out to end the game.

Staton had a pair of doubles, and Mayne and Bunch had home runs for Fullerton. Fresno is 41-17, 16-4.

In another Big West Conference game:

UC Irvine 3, Pacific 1--Rob Johnson (5-10) pitched a five-hitter as visiting Irvine (20-35-1, 6-15) completed a three-game sweep. Irvine scored all three runs in the first inning. Stacy Parker and Ed Luna reached on errors to start the game for Irvine. Parker stole third and scored on a grounder by Al Rodriguez. Chris Gallego singled to score Luna. Gallego went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Freddie Combs. D.J. Heller (2-10) took the loss for Pacific (15-41, 4-16).
