Manager Pete Rose wasn’t around to see it, but the Cincinnati Reds rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, after Rose was ejected in the fourth inning of Monday night’s game at Cincinnati.

Rose received his second ejection of the season for arguing with home plate umpire Tom Hallion after Paul O’Neill was called out on strikes.

Coach Tommy Helms ran the club after Rose’s ejection.

Trailing 5-0, the Reds scored one run in the sixth off Neal Heaton, two in the eighth off Jeff Robinson, and three in the ninth.

Herm Winningham, who grounded out in his first three at-bats and struck out in the eighth with two runners in scoring position, drove in the winning run.

“When I struck out, I came back to the dugout mad and I didn’t say anything,” Winningham said. “Ken Griffey came over to me and said, ‘You’re all right, you’re going to get another turn.’ He was right. It worked out.”

He got his turn because the Reds rallied against the Pirates bullpen with two outs in the ninth. Bo Diaz doubled, Ron Oester singled him home and Jeff Reed walked on four pitches.

Bill Landrum relieved Robinson and walked Chris Sabo on four pitches. He got two strikes on Winningham before Winningham hit a single to right, scoring pinch-runners Skeeter Barnes and Danny Jackson.

Philadelphia 3, San Francisco 2--Bob Dernier hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run with two outs in the 12th inning to end the Phillies’ 20-inning scoreless streak at Philadelphia.

Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell homered on consecutive pitches off Steve Bedrosian (2-2) in the top of the inning to give the Giants the lead. It was Clark’s sixth homer and third hit of the game and Mitchell’s major league-leading 12th homer.

Craig Lefferts (2-1) struck out Von Hayes to start the bottom of the 12th. Pinch-hitter Dickie Thon and Steve Lake hit singles and Steve Jeltz popped out.

Dernier, who in the 10th threw out Clark at the plate, lined a pitch into the left-field corner and the ball eluded Mitchell, skidding along the fence toward center field.

Philadelphia had been shut out Sunday by the Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser.

San Diego 6, Montreal 5--Marvell Wynne snapped an 11th-inning tie with a run-scoring double and Jack Clark added an RBI single as the Padres defeated the Expos at Montreal.

With the score tied, 4-4, Andy McGaffigan walked Bip Roberts with one out and Wynne followed with his third consecutive hit, driving the ball into the right-field corner. One out later, McGaffigan (1-2) intentionally walked Tony Gwynn and Clark hit a single to center.

Mark Davis (2-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief, allowing a run-scoring single in the 11th to pinch-hitter Mike Aldrete. With runners on first and second, Davis struck out Rex Hudler to end the game.

Chicago 4, Atlanta 0--Lloyd McClendon hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat with the Cubs, who ended a five-game losing streak by beating the Braves at Chicago.

McClendon hit Derek Lilliquist’s 1-and-1 pitch over the left-field wall in the third inning after Mark Grace and Damon Berryhill hit singles.

McClendon was acquired by Chicago last December from Cincinnati for outfielder Rolando Roomes, and was brought up Monday from Iowa of the American Assn. McClendon, 30, played in 117 major league games with the Reds.
