Oceanside officials cleared a major hurdle in efforts to open a temporary shelter for homeless families with state approval Monday of a $200,000 federal grant.

The grant is the most that the city can receive from a pool of $1.3 million for cities with populations under 200,000, said Richard Goodman, Oceanside’s housing chief.

The grant will allow the city to either lease or purchase 15 portable trailers on a leased 3-acre site near the San Luis Rey Mission.

The city signed a three-year lease with the property’s owner, Sisters of the Precious Blood, for one dollar a year, Goodman said.

The shelter, which will resemble a mobile-home park with a play area for children, could be open by September, Goodman said. It will operate for three years while a permanent site is sought, Goodman said.

As many as 120 people will be housed in 15 trailers, each with 375 square feet. Families will be allowed to stay for 60 days. They will also receive job training and other assistance from social agencies, Goodman said.
