Danny Sullivan received medical clearance to resume driving today and got behind the wheel of a race car for the first time since crashing last Thursday in practice for the May 28 Indianapolis 500.

Wearing a special protective brace for the right forearm he broke when his Penske PC18-Chevrolet crashed into the wall in the third turn, Sullivan drove a similar car on the track about 25 minutes after today’s practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway began. Sullivan took two slow trips around the 2 1/2-mile oval while warming the Penske team’s backup car up. He quickly had the car moving and had a quick lap at 209.986 m.p.h. early in the practice session.

“Until we’ve been out on the track, we won’t know how the arm feels and what changes, if any, we need to make to the wheel, shift lever and instruments,” Sullivan said Wednesday.
