Roundup : Longeway Pitches Perfect Game for Kennedy

Cheryl Longeway pitched a perfect game as Kennedy High School defeated Rollings Hills, 3-0, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A softball playoffs at Arnold Park in Cypress.

Longeway (18-3) struck out 17 and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield. The only four Rolling Hills’ batters to hit the ball grounded out.

The Fighting Irish (21-4) had only four hits, but three came in a three-run first inning.

With one out, Jackie Duncan reached on an error. Longeway and Missi Gyde followed with singles to load the bases. Stafanie Hill then doubled to left for a 3-0 lead.

Gyde had Kennedy’s only other hit with a single in the fifth inning.

Rolling Hills finishes the season with a 10-11 record.

In other 4-A first-round games:

Brea-Olinda 4, Eisenhower 2--Trisha Barr had a two-run single in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie for the Wildcats (17-6) at Tamarack Park in Brea. Michelle Munro (1-0) pitched a seven-hitter, striking out three, for the victory. Natalie Stevens also had an RBI for Brea-Olinda. Eisenhower finishes the season with a 17-9 record.

Sunny Hills 3, Valencia 1--Kelly Ward hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Lancers (19-6) a 2-1 lead at Sunny Hills. Amy Huett (10-3) pitched four innings in relief, striking out nine, for the victory. Erin McKenney had an RBI double in the fifth for the Lancers. Valencia finishes the season with a 12-13 record.

In the 1-A:

Connelly 3, Western Christian 1--Santina Delligatta (11-3) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10, for the Koalas (11-3) at Connelly. Tina DeMarco had two hits and two RBIs for Connelly. Western Christian finishes the season with an 18-6 record.

Canyon 1, Moreno Valley 0--With one out and one on in the fourth inning, Canyon’s Senetha Thomas tripled to score Dalynne Largee from first base for visiting Canyon (20-11). Canyon’s Sara Roberts (10-2) pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk. Roberts was replaced with two on and one out in the sixth by Kristin Heizer, who retired the last five, striking out three, for her second save.

Rubidoux 7, Villa Park 3--Rubidoux (16-9) scored four runs in the third, starting with a leadoff home run by Kristine Flynn and hung on for the victory at Villa Park (15-13). Stephanie Wills went two for four with an RBI for Villa Park.

Garden Grove 5, Lakewood 0--Junior Stephanie Smith (18-8) pitched a two-hitter, struck out 10 and walked one and Michelle Cash went two for three with a run scored and one RBI for host Garden Grove (20-9).

Western 2, Los Amigos 0--Junior Lisa Sciarrino went two for two with a solo home run in the third inning and scored another run to lead Western (23-5) over visiting Los Amigos (11-16). Dawn Fowler (11-4) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking none.
